Heavy Gear: Golems (Red Alpha Squad)

The latest addition to my Heavy Gear Edenite forces, I like to call these guys "The Firemen". They're a Veteran Alpha Golem squad, and I have two more to add to the unit to bring them up to a full 6-strong status.

Two more for this unit, then on to my second unit of Betas.

Galactic War I: Scale Comparison Shots

Blue Moon plans to release a lot of new 15mm sci-fi codes this summer, and folks have been curious about how the scale of the Blue Moon minis will compare to other popular lines already out there. Hopefully these pics will answer some of these questions!

First up, a shot of 4 Blue Moon sci-fi minis all in a line (a Ferreen, a Universalist trooper, Mercantile Collective trooper, and an Arlock):

Next, we have two of our minis next two a Critical Mass Games sci-fi trooper:

Next up, a comp shot with a GZG sci-fi civilian:

Now we have them flanking one of RAFM's classic sci-fi troopers:

Next we show them with one of Critical Mass Games' superb alien mercs:

Below you can see them compared to one of GZG's sci-fi renegades:

Next up, one of Khurasan's Mantid Warriors:

Next, a Khurasan sci-fi Garn:

Then, one of my own 15mm SuperFigs:

And finally, a Flames of War Sikh:

I hope this helps folks get a handle on the scale compatibility of our upcoming Blue Moon line with other folks' stuff. Any further questions, let me know.

Galactic War I Preview: The Post-Humans

The Post-Humans are genetically created super-soldiers who rebelled and struck out on their own. These genetically superior super-men lack the heavy industry necessary to field a lot of large vehicles, but they make up for this deficiency with prodigious strength and toughness.

Next up, the Universalists!

Galactic War I: Terran Confederation Preview

Here's a shot of the basic Terran Confederation infantry for Galactic War I:

Of the five human factions I have seen and painted so far, these guys are my favorites. The Ferreen are still my overall favorites, but these guys are nipping at their heals!

Heavy Gear: Golems (Beta Squad)

As promised, here are some pics of the HG Beta Squad Golems for my Edenite/CEF forces. These guys will provide some ranged punch against more heavily armored foes. I used the same method to paint them as I did the Alpha Squad, but just replaced the Foundry blue I used with a Foundry green.

And here is a comp shot with one of the Alpha Squad members:

I've got more Golems on the way. These guys would also work well as attack robots for 15mm sci-fi games.

Heavy Gear: Golems (Alpha Squad)

I've been a fan of the Heavy Gear universe and game since 1997. Even back when RAFM was doing the minis in HO (1/87th) scale there were hints that one day we might see miniatures from some of the other colony worlds like Caprice, Eden, and Utopia.

Fast forward to 2010 and a revitalized Dream Pod 9 is cranking out some the niftiest small scale (1/144th, or 12mm) sci-fi mecha you'd ever want to see. Including miniatures for the aforementioned colony worlds. I've really taken a shine to the Eden Golems. The whole power suit thing really plugs into my love of the old Exo-Squad cartoon show. If you've never seen this show, do yourself a favor and check it out for free on Hulu.

So Thursday night I cranked out my first 4 Golem suits and I am really happy with my results. This is an Alpha squad--the Beta squad I do next will have some stand-off weapons capable of punching the armor of lighter Gears.

I also took some comparison shots to give folks an idea of the scale of the Golems relative to other HG minis.

Next post on HG will feature the Beta Squad Golems.

Galactic War I: Orion Republic Preview

I thought I would share some painted shots of the Orion Republic 15mm sci-fi coming up from Blue Moon.

Bob Naismith really knocked it out of the park on these guys!

Testing...Testing--The Importance of a Test Model

As I get older and paint more models, I've come to realize the importance of painting up a test model before trying out a paint scheme on a new unit. It saves on heart break, and frees you up to try new things without fear of botching the project out of the gate.

Before embarking on painting up my Heavy Gear Golems, I dug out an unused Reaper CAV model, the Syram Talon, and had a go at the weathered, blue and white paint scheme I intend to use on the Golems.

I borrowed elements of this scheme from my buddy Danny Microwave. He's a super painter and employs a very organic, free-form style that always results in some spectacular paint jobs.

The idea is nothing new--you employ layers of paint followed by inks and more paint over the inked areas, but Danny is really fearless when he lays the paint on and I tried to channel some of that mojo when I did this. The Golems are a bit smaller than this CAV model, but I think I can achieve some of the weathered look with them, while still maintaining some brightness.

I'll post some results this weekend!

Heavy Gear: Flails

While I am waiting for my new CEF stuff to arrive for the Heavy Gear project, I thought I would knock out that Flail platoon I picked up a few months ago. I don't have the full background on these yet because I do not have the book, but I believe Flails are battle suits that contain vat-grown GREL brains. Kind of robots with cloned human brains as their CPU's. Unlike normal Heavy Gear infantry, they're mounted one to a base instead of 2 or 3 to a base.

I went with a fairly simple and military-looking paint job using Charadon Granite over a Boltgun Metal spray coat. Once I have my book I will go back and do some kind of unit insignia on them.

Love the models! Very unique and slick.

Heavy Gear: GREL Soldiers

I've talked a bit before on this blog about my love of all things Heavy Gear. Since I've finished my Tyranids off at 2135 pts., I decided to add a Heavy Gear project to my to-do list. I already have some Peace River stuff in progress, but I was really drawn to some of the new CEF stuff DP9 has been releasing of late. Especially the Golems. So I placed an order.

In the meantime, I had some CEF GREL super-soldiers sitting around from a past project, so I based them up and put some paint on them. Very cool little 12mm (N-scale) minis!

I've got some Flails I'll work on this week while I am waiting for my Golems and other stuff to arrive!
