Barebones Fantasy: Some Tinkering

Ok, after having it for a few days, I can say I am smitten with Barebones Fantasy!  Like many other gamers, when I like a system, I want can't resist the urge to tinker with it. In BBF, the idea of character classes finds expression in Skills. Well, there is no Monk skill, and Monk is probably my favorite character class in traditional D&D-type fantasy.

So with some ideas and guidance from Altered Priest on rpg.net, I decided to try my hand at making my own!

Here's what I came up with:

Monk

This skill represents a melding of a character’s mental and physical discipline into a coherent and potent style of fighting, moving, and living.
Score: half Wil +10 per Monk level. Cannot be attempted unskilled.
» Pure Body
    » Resist Poison
» Heal Self (once per encounter heal 1D BP on a successful check, 2D BP on a critical success)
    » Ignore Environmental Effects.
» Armor Prohibition (If the character wears armor of any kind, he loses the special abilities associated with this skill.)
» Pure Mind
» Mental Resistance (Use your WIL check or Monk check to resist charm, illusion, etc.)
    » Resist Fear.
» Transcendent Body
» Controlled Fall (ignore damage from falls of height equal to Monk skill or less)
» Swiftness (+1 space to Move per Monk level)
» Deflection (at level 3 and beyond ignore disadvantage against ranged attacks.)
» Iron Fist (your body is a deadly weapon; you count as being armed for purposes of defending yourself in combat, you use your Monk skill to make attacks when fighting unarmed, and your unarmed strikes do 1D+1 damage [increases to 1D+3 at level 3, and 2D at level 6]. At level 4 and higher the monk’s unarmed attacks count as magic weapons.)
» Transcendent Mind
» Impress (wise sayings, awe-inspiring display of prowess)
    » Charm Animals
» Intimidate (demoralizing shout, stare down enemy).
» Stunning Strike (Before rolling the dice the character may announce he is attempting this special unarmed strike, using his Monk skill for this attack. If his attack hits it does damage as normal and his target counts as stunned and can make normal resistance checks to remove the condition. Stunning Strike may be used a number of times per Encounter equal to the character's Monk level.)
» Weapons Focus (When a monk is made the player must declare 1 weapon that fit the monk’s style--he may use his Monk skill as the basis for attacks with this chosen weapon.)
Level       Monk Title
1             Student
2             Initiate
3             Disciple
4             Seeker
5             Enlightened One
6             Master

Of course, I need to test this in play, but I am excited to do so, and I think with a few tweaks this will do a nice job of modeling the Monk.

Barebones Fantasy Delivers The Goods!

Let's face it, there are a lot of fantasy heartbreakers out there in the RPG industry. Barebones Fantasy is not one of them! This little 84 page, digest-sized gem of a book delivers awesome traditional fantasy RPG action with a few neat twists. It's percentile based, uses only D10s for all resolution, and offers the 4 classic fantasy races as PCs: Elf, Dwarf, Human, Halfling.

The magic system possesses a slick and versatile character that makes it diverse without being complicated. And it's miniature friendly! Bonus!

Anyway, more BBF as I run through some play-tests!

Colonial Hover Truck

I picked this resin 15mm vehicle up so long ago I don't remember who made it, but I want to say it was Old Crow.

Anyway, it makes a perfect work truck for my DSG Colony-15 minis.  Yesterday I took an hour to paint it up, and weathered the crap out of it.  As a work vehicle, I feel like it would certainly be dirty and beaten, so that's what I did to it.

Check it out!

Another 15mm Alien

...from our friends at 15mm.co.uk, who else?  This guy reminds me of one of the many aliens from the second episode of the 9th Doctor Who (somebody help me out with his name).

Anyway, as with other offerings from the lads at 15mm.co.uk, he practically painted himself. Nice details and plenty of character!

GZG Civilian Scientist

I wanted to give the Wargames Foundry Lemon Yellow 3-step paint palette a try, so I dug out one of my GZG civilian scientist types and went to work.  Not long after that, I was quite pleased with the outcome!

Check him out!

DSG Colony-1 Female Colonist

The Darkest Star Games Colonists represent everything I love about the 15mm sci-fi renaissance we're currently enjoying--loads of character, great details, awesomely priced, and easy to paint.

Today I'm featuring a lass who might be the best figure in this 5-model pack of Colonists. Check her out!

Here with the 1st DSG Colonist I did.

Here with a RAFM explorer--a lovely couple!
More good stuff to come as I make my way through this excellent pack of sci-fi goodness!

Blasters & Bulkheads 2nd ed. Page Previews!

Joe D. has delivered some page shots of the B&B 2nd ed. layout, and I am very pleased! Our main goal with this version of B&B was a clean and readable layout that will print well in a black and white, and I think Joe's work is spot on here! Check out some of the pages!

At the rate we're going, we may see the book available on Lulu before month's end, and the PDF should be available around the same time.

Darkest Star Games Colonist Done!

I received my pre-order of Darkest Star Games excellent 15mm sci-fi Colonists from the aptly named Colony-15 range. I managed to get one painted up in between running errands on a nice day off of work.

Here he is!

I'll try to get to at least one or two more of these this week. Bob Naismith has again turned in some cracking work on these figures.  They'll work wonderfully for any number of scenarios and RPG scenes, or as player characters themselves!

Villain Mission Force Followup

Following on the great success and fun I enjoyed running Giant Sized Villain Mission Force #1 last weekend, I have been re-working my charts and setup and thinking about running more regular games of VMF with my normal RPG group. Once we finish up the Shadowrun campaign (roughly two sessions remain) I plan to launch into semi-regular installments, time permitting.

In the meantime I have plenty of Heroclix to re-base and touch up.  Here's my latest handiwork: Bullseye!

Bullseye might be one of the best-sculpted Heroclix I've ever seen. He certainly required little to no paint work once he was re-based.

In between 15mm stuff, I'll feature more articles on y work and progress with VMF.  If folks are interested in my revised background and character generation charts, I can share those as well.  They can be adapted to any rules, but I will add another plug for BASH, my favorite set of superhero RPG rules.

Utility Bot

Another little gem from 15mm.co.uk, I think this robot will make a great Utility Bot for scuttling about a dig site or workshop and aiding his master in research or mechanical endeavors.

Check him out!

Goalsystem Delves Available At Cold Wars

I just wanted to let folks know that Goalsystem Delves will be available at the Old Glory booth at Cold Wars this weekend (March 7 - 10). J. Lee Howard has kindly consented to handle selling them for me at the show!  The show special on these is $35.

Of course, if you or an agent cannot attend the show, you can still purchase PDF copies of the book through the normal channels:  Wargame Downloads and Saber's Edge.

Print books can be purchased online through the Noble Knight store

In other news, Joe D. is working through the layout on B&B 2nd ed. and I hope to have some page views this weekend.  Perhaps I can show some off if we reach that point.

We shall see!

Another Weird Alien From 15mm.co,uk

Man, when it comes time to populate my crazy alien cantina, there is going to be a waiting list! The fine folks at 15mm.co.uk have provided me another great alien character! Check him out!

Thanks to his "hover-round" he can get anywhere!

I think I will go back in and add some color and details to the chair apparatus.

And there's more where this came from!

Giant-Sized Villain Mission Force #1

What do you get when you take The Trapster, Scorpion, and Boomerang, and send them on a mission to recover hidden Kree technology at Roswell, NM?  Why, Giant-Sized Villain Mission Force #1, of course!

Last night I was asked on very short notice to run an episode of VMF for Rico, Jeff, and Patrick (a very nice fellow from the company behind Mage Wars), so I busted out my BASH rules and threw something together.  And it worked!  We all had a blast!

The actual issue did not include Stilt-Man, but I could resist showing him!
