Mage Knight Re-Paints

Managed to get two more Mage Knight figures re-painted last night.  The Cleric and the Fighter are now done!

Here's the Priest (Cleric):

I did not fancy the cleric's original weapon, so I swapped it out with a Skaven hand and weapon.

And here's the Fighter (Spear Fighter):

And here's the trio right now:

More to come, and more Goalsystem Delves stuff this weekend!

Re-Painted Mage Knight Mage

I got the first of my four Mage Knight re-paints done last night. He'll make a superb Mage (Wizard) for the Delves play-testing I've been doing.

That last shot stands him next to a Reaper fire mage I painted a while back.

Can't wait to get my other MK figures for this project in the mail, but in the meantime, look for another Delves Design log soon!

Building A Mage Knight Style Party

Writing has robbed me of much of my painting time. I have been able to sneak in single figures here and there, and I hope to keep doing this. Just as a fun exercise, I thought I might pursue a sort of "project within the project," and while I continue work on the Delves rules I thought it might be fun to build a party of four adventurers by selecting, buying, and then re-painting Mage Knight plastics.

I decided to go the classic Fighter, Thief, Mage, Priest route for party composition. I can always add other classes later if this turns out to be a lot of fun for me. Anyway, I buy most of my MK figs from eBay using Grunhirs Game Emporium.  Why them?  Well, great service, selection, and convenience combine to make Grunhirs a favorite seller of mine. Anyway, after plowing through his listings, here's what I've come up with for this mini-project.

Fighter

This figure is the Mage Knight 2.0 Cloud Warrior.  He'll make a dynamic Spear Fighter for my game.

Thief

This figure is Mage Knight Unlimited Leech Medic and she'll make a fine Thief Acrobat.

Priest

Rurik the Cursed will make a very cool Priest character.

Mage

I simply had to include this guy when I saw him--he'll make an amazing Elf Mage!

Anyway, I'll keep folks apprised of my progress.  I hope to have at least one re-paint done by this weekend.

Monsters For The Delve

In casting about my collection for ready monsters to use in play-tests of Goalsystem Dungeon Delve I came across these "lovely" Mage Knight giant worms. I long ago threw away their MK bases, so forgive me for not knowing their actual names! I do know they'll make excellent lower-tier threats for the Caravan adventure I am currently working on for the book!

And a comparison shot with the Reaper monk:

For that matter, the Fang Worm I touched up a couple years ago would work very well too!

Off The Shelf: Re-Purposed Pre-Paints

I get a lot of use out of re-purposed and re-painted Mage Knight and Hero Clix figures.

Today's post will show off a few of my favorites.

Here's a re-painted Mage Knight figure I've used for games of Dark Heresy; he/she would also work well for fantasy games:

And here's a shot of a DC Clix Parademon:

I need to get more of these guys as they make awesome sci-fi or fantasy henchmen!

Mordheim Kislevite Bear Proxy?

Ever want to kick yourself for not buying a miniature when you had the chance? Around ten years ago (that long already?) I had the chance to buy the Mordheim Kislevites from GW. I passed, and I forever regret it. Now they're OOP, and hard to find!

The band featured a trained bear and his trainer among the cool options. Here's a pic of the trainer:

That's an image I found online--wish I owned him!

Anyway, at Origins I found a Mage Knight bear that got me thinking I should just make my own Kislevite warband using various proxy minis. So last night I worked on the bear, and here he is!

And here is a comp shot for scale:

I'll drop in more articles on this project in between some more 15mm stuff as time permits. Thanks for visiting!

Test Paint: MK Steam Knight

My buddy Rico and I are thinking of doing a Warmachine Rhulic (Dwarven) force, and I am looking for some way to shortcut the painting using Army Painter sprays. I decided to use a Mage Knight figure to conduct a test paint for one of the sprays, Desert Yellow. Here are the results!

After cleaning some of the mold lines off, I based him, then primed with Desert Yellow. After allowing it to dry, I inked the whole model with Devlan Mud wash from GW (mixed with a bit of white glue, as usual). I then did the metallic with Vallejo Gunmetal and some brass. I inked those with Badab Black.

I like the results, but I am still not sure I like them for my Rhulic force. I might want to go closer to the stock paint scheme, which is a weathered, off-white. Similar to one of my favorite foundry colors, Rawhide. More thought is required on this one!

Thanks for looking!

Mage Knight Re-Paint: Wood Elemental

I've had this guy ready for a re-paint for months, so tonight I pulled him down from the "limbo" shelf and knocked him out. This is a great miniature from the Mage Knight line. I've long since lost his base, so I cannot accurately ID him. I'm hoping some keen-eyed reader will step in and do so!

Of course, this guy could be used in D&D, and he would work great in my SoBH Garden Party warband!

Anyway, here he is!

And here's a comp shot for scale:

Sand Golems!

I really can't mention the old Mage Knight line enough on this blog. It continues to be a repository of miniature possibilities that is second to none. Exhibit 49-B, the Sand Minions!

I will eventually be needing some Sand Golems for my Dark Sun RPG sessions, so in cruising eBay, I came across this mini, and it was perfect. I ordered a pair ($1.00 ea.), and right out of the box they require little to no alteration to fill the desired monster role. After popping them off of their bases and re-basing them appropriately, I touched up the paint job slightly (re-painting some weird blue bumps on their bodies gray). I then flocked, painted, and dry-brushed their bases, and whammo, instant Sand Golems!

Here they are side by side with a Reaper Dragon man Shaman (also excellent for DS!):

And some random battle shots:

Later this week I hope to show off some re-purposed Reaper spell effects.

As always, thanks for checking out the blog!
