Reaper Post Apoc Mutant

I bought this guy a while back and then asked my friend Sky to sculpt a shirt onto him. Sky complied and did a bang-up job, and then the figure sat on my bench for months. Then today I painted him!

That's the way it goes sometimes!  But this guy has Dark Heresy/Inquisitor written all over him.

Pictured here with a GW conversion I did for Dark Heresy.

Not sure if I'd use him as a PC or an NPC villain, but I will also definitely include him a in skirmish game warband.

Thanks for visiting!

Dark Heresy: Criminal Campaign

My buddy Dan has proposed running a crime-based DH game set deep in some Imperial Underhive. Though not a straight "Necromunda" game, it will have that vibe. As a lover of all things DH, I of course eagerly agreed to play, and last night went to work on a possible model for my character.

I say possible because I may later settle on an Adept (scientist-type) instead of just a thug, so I may change things up. We'll see.

Anyway, this guy will get good use in a few different quarters, including for ITEN, and yes, also in a DH game.

Here's a quick rundown on the parts I used:

Head = Empire Flagellants
Body = Mordheim/Empire Militia
Right Arm = Cadians
Left Arm = Mordheim/Empire Militia
Legs/Lower Torso = Catachans
Big Knife = Kroot
Pouch = Bretonians
Pistol = Heresy Miniatures (metal)

And here's a comp shot with an older conversion (one of my own kit-bashed Stormtroopers):

The Inquisitorial Agent

I've really been enjoying getting after the Cobalt-1 figures from Black Hat. So much character and dynamism, and lots of easily paintable details!

Tonight I knocked out the Major Callon character. Sculpted by Bob Naismith, this guy features some very cool gear and attire, but after priming him, I decided I did not like his gun. Instead I busted out the jeweler's saw and removed it and the right hand entirely, replacing it with a right hand from a plastic Catachan Jungle Fighter and a metal blaster pistol from Heresy miniatures.

Here he is:

And here's a comp shot for scale:

I really like the results. If I played him as a Dark Heresy or Inquisitor character, I'd make him either bounty hunter, or a Psychic Blank--those untouchables used so well in Dan Abnett's Eisenhorn novels.

Hopefully I can get to another one this week, but I do have Dwarves to paint and an RPG adventure to prep for! We'll see....

Inquisitor 54mm: Blast From the Past

While going through some old pictures of miniatures, I came across this gem:

He's a Bob Naismith sculpt, marking a brief return to work for GW--this had to have been made around 2002-2004, I think.

I loved the idea of the Inquisitor skirmish game, but going from 28mm to 54mm is a lot harder than going from 28mm to 15mm. It just represents a much greater commitment, and requires you convincing all of your gaming group to buy in with you. Ultimately, it was a failure, but I still have a half-dozen or so of the minis (including this one), and I pull them out every now and then just to gawk at them.

Now if anybody has copies of the Imperial Mine Workers Bob N. did for Inquisitor, let me know. Nostalgia would force me to try to swing a trade for them!

Zou Delivers Emperor's Mercy

My love of the Inquisitor mythos of GW's Warhammer 40,000 universe is well known. Much of this stems from Dan Abnett's Inquisitor novels. Some new Inquisitor related fiction was recently released from the Black Library, and it has proven to be a ripping good yarn.

Emperor's Mercy by newcomer Henry Zou doesn't flow as easily as Abnett's stuff, but the story and characters provide plenty for the reader to grab onto, and there is no shortage of gritty, gory, sci-fi action. Despite a few minor character development and continuity issues, Emperor's Mercy engages the reader with a staccato rhythm of violence and sacrifice. Inquisitor Obadiah Roth must find the truth about a group of artifacts know as the Old Kings before a ravening Chaos horde can do the same.

Fairly young in his career as an Inquisitor, Roth does not have the retinue of an Eisenhorn or Ravenor, but he is nonetheless surrounded by interesting support characters, often finding himself on the front lines of what author Zou has called the Bastion Wars. In fact, this volume is the first in a series of books on the conflict against Chaos occurring in Zou's personal corner of the 40K universe, the Bastion Stars.

Mr. Zou ties the story up nicely while artfully setting up the action for the ensuing novels. Much better than Sandy Mitchell's Purge the Unclean novel that came out along with the Dark Heresy RPG more than a year ago, Emperor's Mercy delivers the Inquisitorial goods.
