Doctor Who RPG Character

My buddy Dan is planning to run a Doctor Who RPG session tonight set in the Victorian Era. I decided to make a gypsy character, and chose to use Blue Moon's Gypsy Knife Fighter model to represent him.

Should be interesting playing a fighter type in a non-combat oriented game. I'll be sure to give him some other skills and knacks that will make him useful. I just remember that in the classic Tom Baker Who episodes, one of his companions, Leela, was always waving a knife around. Should work out OK.

Looking through some sites of Gypsy names, I think I will call him Gunari Domanoff.

Looking forward to trying this game!

D&D 4E Goblin Druid

I got to play some Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition Wednesday night, and I had a blast. I picked up Players Handbook 2 beforehand and made a Goblin Druid. Since the game is set in Eberron, goblins are much more accepted as player characters.

Of course, I had to use the Terronus Goblin Druid miniature for my character. I painted up a new version on a smaller, 20mm slotted base, and added a Star Wars Miniatures Vornskr as his Wild Shape model. In 4th ed. the Druid is no longer sidled with an Animal Companion, but he can take a Wild Shape form that gives him access to cool striking powers.

I really love what 4th ed. has done with this class. He's now a cool close-in fighter when he needs to be, but he can also zap foes and control the combat area with deadly ranged elemental magic.

Also, here's a scale comparison shot with a Reaper chain fighter miniature:

Guardians of the Galaxy #21

My favorite comic book, Guardians of the Galaxy gave me an early Christmas present this year with issue #21. Fabulous issue! A Realm of Kings tie-in, this issue further explores the dark creatures coming out of the rift created by the gigantic explosion at the end of War of Kings.

Confused? Go here for details. Anyway, GotG #21 features some amazing fight sequences between the heroes and some nasties from another dimension. And we get more details on the Luminals, the OTHER group of cosmic heroes inhabiting Knowhere, the Guardians' interdimensional base of operations. Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning turn in a dynamite story, and penciler Brad Walker turns in his second straight awesome issue. Keep it up, Mr. Walker, we're counting you!

Check this issue out if you like cosmic level superhero action!

3030's Resident Scholar

Dev Ashe is Starport 3030's most learned man--he'll tell you that himself over a cup of grog at Jasper's. He's earned three degrees in Xeno Anthropology and Religion from the University on Thaxis. Also claims to possess amazing psychic potential.

Rik Flores works for Dev. He's a driver, a digger, and a bodyguard. That sawed-off he's carrying isn't for show.

Daymon Sul isn't just a dealer in alien antiquities, he's Ashe's partner when it comes to moving rare alien artifacts off of the planet and into the black market.

Even a scholar has to eat!

The Robber Band: Big Hans!

From Stuttgart with love comes Big Hans! I converted this character from four separate SuperFigs (2 Plasti-Men, 1 model from the Paragons pack, and the head of Particle). I wanted a character who would look a bit like Meteor Man from the Galaxy Trio.

Big Hans
Affiliation: The Robber Band
BP: 85
AP: 5[10]
Attributes
Strength 6[1] Agility 3 Mind 2 Resolve 5
Powers/Character Mods
Armor x 2
Combat Prowess x 3
--Super x 1
Elasticity
Enhanced Senses x 2
Extra Movement x 5
Instant Stand
Melee Attack x 3
--Super x 1
Super-Strength x 1
Vitality: 11

A low-level mutate possessing limited super-strength, Hans Herrmann emigrated to America seeking a means to enhance his powers. After pulling a few heists of check cashing facilities in the New England area, Hans headed west and eventually found himself in River City, OH. There he met up with Daddy Wrong-Legs and asked him to give him a dose of Agent-X. Realizing his team needed some muscle, Wrong-Legs complied, and the super-resin worked its magic on Hans, enhancing his strength and giving him amazing stretching powers. Now Big Hans uses his enlarged, hammer-like fists to deal out pain for the Robber Band!

The Power Behind Starport 3030

Baron Aldus Sarkos holds the lease on Starport 3030's planetary rights. As a duly appointed representative of the Imperial Government on the planet, he is also the seen as the last stop when it comes to making legal decisions. His house guard (to be featured in a future post) comprise one of the most elite fighting forces on the planet.

His niece is Leal Sarkos, a headstrong woman looking to make her own way as a starship captain, but first she needs a ship!

Both figures are from the Laserburn line from 15mm.co.uk.

Doctor Who RPG: Thumbs Up!

Just picked this up from the FLGS, and I have to say it is magnificent! What a wonderful looking game!

The system looks as elegant as the components. And for you other 1980's era gamers out there, it is a good old fashioned boxed set with dice and everything!

Great job, Cubicle-7! And here's what the game looks like.

Here's an RPG.Net thread that dissects the contents in detail.

I may get to play in a game sometime! The possibilities for character generation are endless!

The Robber Band: Snap-Black!

Time to meet another member of the Robber Band! This time it's 1970's throwback Snap-Black!

This figure is based off of the Polymer stretching figure from the SuperFigs line. A while back I had his right arm re-sculpted by my buddy Jan. I wanted it to be more obvious that he did indeed possess stretching powers. Not sure we'll ever release the re-done version, as it's not much of a change, but I really like him a lot!

Time traveler from the 1970's Louis Wilkins once possessed the uncanny ability to find and enter small worm holes in the fabric of reality. This ability lead him to the current era. He only intended to stay for a brief visit, but when he arrived he became caught up in a heated super-battle between the Hunter and Daddy Wrong-Legs. Not able to dodge in time, Wilkins was struck by some debris from an attack meant for Hunter. The severe blow to the head not only unhinged Wilkins, but robbed him of his time-traveling powers!

Distraught, angry, and seeking revenge, Wilkins eventually tracked down Daddy Wrong-Legs and Long Connie with the intent to attack them. But Long Connie's silver tongue convinced the now delusional Wilkins that his true enemy was the Hunter, and heroes like him! Then Daddy Wrong-Legs applied the Agent-X resin to Wilkins, and he was transformed into the third member of the Robber Band. In addition to basic super-stretching powers, Wilkins gained the ability to use his elastic form to turn foes' punches and kicks back on them. Because of this, and to honor his 1970's era origins, he took the name Snap-Black!

Both Daddy Wrong-Legs and Long Connie don't know how long the effects of Wilkins' injury, or Connie's conditioning, will last. They watch their comrade closely, but in the meantime they rely on his amazing elusiveness to confound their enemies in battle.

Some Quick RPG Notes

Starblazer Adventures
I finally managed to run a game of Starblazer Adventures this past weekend, and I was very pleased at how things went. It uses the FATE gaming engine, and really incorporates some interesting and genre appropriate mods (like rules for building starhips, star empires, and space monsters just as you would for a normal character). The only issue I had during play was keeping track of my player characters' Aspects. Aspects are neat little traits the players make up for their characters that help flesh out who they are.

An Aspect can be anything, really. One example is "Girl in every starport"; a player could use this to invoke a contact not fleshed out ahead of time by the GM. The GM could also use it to create a complication for the player. Each player has 10 of these Aspects, and there is no set list. As the GM, I have to keep track of all of these and remember to compel them, or bring them into play, once in a while. Of course, the players can remind me, and I think they will as we play more sessions. We all just need to get more comfortable with the process of playing the game.

BASH: Ultimate Edition
As any regular reader of this blog knows, I am a superhero nut. I collect supers games. I never got the first edition of BASH (Basic Action Super Heroes), but I purchased the print version of this revised edition (not yet released) and got the PDF for free along with it. I am really enjoying it so far. It looks like a supers RPG that successfully walks the middle road between highly detailed power and action systems (HERO, M&M) and very free-form (Truth & Justice, Super Crew). It is also miniature friendly right out of the gate, so I am excited about that as well.

Anyway, I may try to throw together a game over the holidays and see how it plays.

Both of these RPGs get my thumbs up!

Marik Jaysen, Bounty Hunter

One of the many denizens of Starport 3030, Marik Jaysen makes his way in the galaxy hunting down wanted criminals and bringing them to justice.

This is a remarkable character figure from the old Laserburn sci-fi line now sold by 15mm.co.uk.

Also from that same dynamite line is Jaysen's robotic assistant and friend, Tyron-Delta9 (aka TD9). Formerly a security hover-bot now several generations out of date, Jaysen purchased TD9 from the scrap heap and restored his logic circuits. His tinkering also gave the robot some rather interesting personality quirks, chief among them a penchant for driving too fast around the spaceport.

This unlikely pair of bounty hunters needs something to zip around the spaceport in, so they have a few options.

The Ceres-IV Runabout does not have tremendous range or speed, but its superior maneuverability make it ideal for zipping about the crowded streets of the 3030.

This nifty little model can also be had from the Laserburn line.

Sometimes when he has larger quarry to bring in, or a sofa to move, Jaysen will borrow his accountant, Grif Memmon's Hover Sedan. This El Camino like ride provides plenty of space in the rear compartment for an unconscious bail jumper. Or a piece of hastily discarded furniture.

And here's Grif Memmon, accountant to bounty hunters and raconteurs alike!

There's more to come for Starport 3030! Hope you enjoyed this most recent visit!

Somebody Call The Cops!

The 15mm cops, that is. These GZG Hammer's Slammers troopers will make excellent peace officers for my Starport 3030 setting.

Their proportions are a bit chunky, but as with all things 15mm, they blend in pretty well when consistently based with the other models. The two comparison shots are with a GZG Ravager space pirate, and a RAFM crewman.

Now I have to paint up the five remaining guys to complete Starport 3030's 1st Peace Keeper Precinct.

A Pulp Figures Diversion

A couple of weeks back I painted a few figures for a Savage Worlds skirmish game my friend Rico ran at our FLGS. Both are from the excellent Pulp Figures line.

I managed to snap a few pics, and here they are!

The above minis is from the Dime Store Tough Guys pack.

Although a bit dark, the second (above) pick shows Lal Singh, from the Stalwart Companions pack.

Bob Murch will always be among my top favorite sculptors, and his line remains one of the best in the business!

Goblin Painting Company

I thought I would take a moment to give a little plug to my buddy Rico's excellent painting blog, The Goblin Painting Company.

Here's the actual URL link:

www.goblinpaintingcompany.wordpress.com

Here's a sample of his work:

Great stuff! He's a masterful blender, but he can also work very fast when needed. I know that when I am gaming with Rico, it'll be fun, because his stuff always looks so great!
