Skaven: Classic Plastic

I painted up two classic plastic Skaven yesterday. I figure I will throw these guys into the back ranks of my Stormvermin unit to fill it out a bit more.

Surprisingly nice details on these models!

Skaven Warpfire Team

This plastic Skaven Warpfire Thrower team came from the Isle of Blood boxed set, and I finished it up this past Sunday for use in my Skaven army. I think I'll attach it to my Stormvermin unit.

I believe I have a pressing appointment with the Undead this Sunday, and I may need to light things up a bit! Do zombies burn?

Skaven Stormvermin Unit Finished!

At least for now. It counts as 28 strong, but I built the movement base to accommodate 35 rats.

Here are some shots!

I'll fill that empty back rank up with giant rats until I can get 7 more Stormvermin from somewhere.

Below you can see a better shot of the unit standard:

And below you can see a closer shot of the second Rat Ogre filler model:

I really like the look the Rat Ogres bring to the unit.

Skaven Stormvermin Unit Filler!

Right now I am not in a position to field a 35-rat Stormvermin unit, but I'd like to. So to buff up the 20 Stormvermin I got in my boxed set, I am adding in the two Rat Ogres from the WFB starter box. These guys will act as unit filler, effectively standing for 8 more Stormvermin, and they'll look darn cool doing it.

Here's the first one done:

I hope to have a shot of the nearly completed unit by Friday or Saturday! Work continues apace!

Skaven Warlord Skivak Whitefang

I wanted to do a new warlord to go along with my new unit of Stormvermin for my Skaven army, so I utilized one of the Stormvermin models and added a tentacle arm for good measure. Skivak Whitefang has led the White Rats for more than a year, and works very closely with Master Moulder Tak Fleshshaper to get things done for the army as they compete for control of the Bretonnian city of Mousillon.

Here he is:

Next post, Skivak's bodyguard in the White Rats!

Skaven Warplock Engineer

I needed a magic user for my Skaven army, so I acquired the lovely plastic Warplock Engineer from the the latest WFB boxed set, and painted him up!

All week I'll be featuring more shots of the White Rats, a unit of Stromvermin I am working on for this week's first big installment of our 12 week Warhammer campaign!

Skaven Stormvermin Test Model

Before undertaking any unit, I always do a test model. Here is the first Stormvermin model for the WFB campaign we're doing at Phantom:

As Stormvermin of Clan Moulder, the mercenary unit known as the White Rats were all bred to be great warriors with an affinity for handling magic weapons. They seek magical plunder as a biological imperative. Whether this translates into any real luck or power on the battlefield remains to be seen!

WFB Skaven: Hellpit Abomination Comp Shots

Here are some comp shots of my newly painted Hellpit Abomination:

This massive piece also possesses some amazing rules, and he is, shall we say, aggressively costed at 250 pts. You get plenty of bang for your buck with this guy!

Undead beware!

WFB Skaven: Hellpit Abomination!

In getting ready for the Halloween WFB events I'll be playing in, I've made a radical change in direction as to the army I will field. I'm returning to Skaven! My buddy Rico has decided he wants to do a small Chaos force, so it makes a lot more sense for me to team with him using Skaven rather than Dwarves.

Since I have 1400 pts. of rats already, I just need to freshen them up a bit. Enter the Hellpit Abomination! This massive plastic kit had been sitting unpainted at Phantom for a while, so I cajoled them into letting me have a go at it.

Here's my preliminary results (I may re-visit him and add further details):

As you can see above, I have him on a huge base. His base was missing when I got him, so I made one from styrene and guestimated the size. I think he looks pretty good, but it might be a tad large.

I did not consult a painted image and decided to just go my own way on how I would paint him. I included lots of earth tones--befitting a creature who began its life as a worm!

Tomorrow I will feature a couple of scale shots of the Hellpit Abom next to some normal Skaven and a Rat Ogre.

WFB: Rats In Unusual Numbers

My buddy Rico and I were talking about playing Warhammer Fantasy Battle again, and I realized I had not yet shown off my recently completed unit of 60 Giant Rats. Yes, I went there. It is a horde of hordes, and surprisingly effective in the two games I have fielded them in.

If anything, they're a tar-pit that when placed in the center of my lines, proves difficult to avoid!

In making the unit I used GW rats from every conceivable source, including Necromunda and some long OOP fantasy models (thanks, Lou!).

As impressive as they are, a bit of good cannon fire sends them packing! They are Skaven, after all!

Skaven Assassin!

Looking through the Skaven army book, I found a listing among the characters for an Assassin. This is an easy way to add 120 pts. to a Skaven army by only painting one model. And he is fairly effective if used well!

I decided to convert my own plastic Assassin from available bits. Here he is!

I decided to give him a magic blade, hence the blue effects.

At this point, he'll usually be hiding in my Clanrat horde.

I think the next step with the Skaven will be to await the release of the Island of Blood boxed set and start in on the 40 Clan Rats you get with it. I need a second large infantry unit.

Tak Fleshshaper--Master Moulder!

I'm always plugging away on my Skaven army, so I thought I would show off a nifty conversion I did with the help of my good buddy, Sky.

It's Tak Fleshshaper, my Master Moulder! He'll spend much of his time using his vaunted LD 6 to keep my Rat Ogres in line.

Never at a loss for an encouraging word (or two!), Tak is a gifted conservationist and masterful motivator of vermin!

Skaven: Meet Chieftan Skiklak

I knew I needed a Chieftan model (a sort of lesser warlord) for my 500 pt. Skaven force for the Phantom Doubles tourney. I decided to make one from components of the old Clan Rat boxed set, and some Kroot bits. As conversions go, this is a mild one, just slamming some bits together, but it's a nice result, I think.

Here's a comp shot of Skiklak with a new gen Clan Rat:

And Skiklak with his favorite slave, the Gnoblar named Kinni:

And Skiklak next to one of Moulder's finest Rat Ogres:

And finally a couple of close-up shots of that Rat Ogre, one of my favorites of the 6 I have done to this point:

Pics were taken on War Torn Worlds' excellent Swamp Lake terrain piece.
