15mm Super Apes!!!

I used to dabble in sculpting, and a few years ago, I sculpted up a 15mm ape. I showed it to Scott - he liked it, and asked me if I could sculpt up a couple others. I did, and here is the result. I tried to make each one a little different from the other, and gave them each a similar belt to hopefully tie them all together, and make them look more "comic book like," if you will. One also got power gloves (the Orangutan). I finally got around to basing them (they've been patined for quite awhile now). The figures were actually produced as masters, but never made it into production. If only Julius Schwartz was still around...

15mm Fantasy Adventurers: The Wizard

What's fantasy without magic?  This time up I have completed the 15mm Wizard. I went with red robes and cap for this guy--he's true neutral and pretty mercenary, so he is a member of the Esoteric Order of Ember, a group of fire mages who sell their services to the highest bidders.

He likely he has a few scrolls in that pack!

15mm Fantasy Adventurers: The Fighter

A while back I acquired some 15mm fantasy figures from Noble Knight Games. This past weekend I got to thinking it might be cool to paint up a traditional adventuring party in 15mm.  Today I am featuring my Fighter!

Heavily armored in plate, I envision this guy as a questing Knight Errant, and the anchor of the 15mm adventuring party.

Next up, the Wizard!

Pulp Figures Raptor

I've had this model for years, just waiting to be painted. It's a lovely Bob Murch Saurian Predator from his wonderful Pulp Figures line. Last night I finally got some paint on him!

And as you can see, this figure works very well across 15mm and 28mm scales:

He'd make an ideal exotic Animal Companion for a D&D Druid.

In 15mm he's a deadly menace to these DSG Colonists!

15mm: A Return

Life is about transitions. In the next year my wife and I may be moving to smaller digs. Nothing is certain, but the possibility is a strong one. This means I need to re-evaluate the last 20 years of my miniature collecting. I've always been a prolific modeler and painter, so maybe that makes it easier for me to let go of an army, warband, or individual figure, knowing that I can crank out replacements if the desire hits me.

So over the next few months I am going to sell off a lot of my older painted (and unpainted) figures that I am not using, or that I don't plan to use. The idea is to cut down to the core of my collection, the stuff I use a lot or just won't part with. In the meantime I've been thinking that a return to 15mm modelling and painting is now in order. With 15mm I can still make small purchases and satisfy my desire to paint and collect, and I get satisfying games in on a 2' x 2' square. This scale seems ideal for gaming in a condo or smaller house.

So to celebrate my return to 15mm painting and gaming, I plan to work in some posts with those themes in mind. Games on a 2x2--stuff like Blasters & Bulkheads, Gruntz (a game I have ordered, but not yet tried), and maybe even some fantasy stuff using the excellent 15mm range from Copplestone Castings.

Next to a Khurasan Garn.

For today I've painted up just one figure, but hey, I need to get back in the swing of things! It's a great mini from Critical Mass Games' mercenaries line. More to come!

Great Source of Cheap Bases

I was wandering through Staples yesterday and I came across a package of 101 toy U.S. coins for $1.00! The first thing I thought was: cheap bases!

After pressing the package into my wife's hand and telling her my intentions, she smiled ruefully and bought them for me. Thanks, JoAnn! Anyway, here they are:

I'll do a follow-up post where I use these for some basing sometime soon, but I had to share this ASAP so folks could grab them while they're there.

It Came From My Backlog: Armorcast Steam Walker

While rooting through some stuff from my backlog the other day I found this nifty resin steam walker from Armorcast. I bought it at Origins 2002 and sat unpainted until now. Just a quick and dirty, rusty scheme, but it is now ready for use in any number of games.

Check it out!

The turret rotates and the legs come off, so it's pretty easy to store. With it being resin, it is also light and fairly chip resistant.

Here's a comp shot with a 28mm Mage Knight re-paint I did:

And here's a shot with a Rebel Minis 15mm sci-fi trooper:

He might scale better with 15mm stuff!

15mm Fantasy: Mind Flayer Attacks!

I've had this old Ral Partha 15mm Mind Flayer for years, but now I've finally pulled him out and painted him up!

A great little figure that scales well with current 15mm/18mm offerings.

Here's a comp shot of him going against a Copplestone Northlander:

I wish I still had the rest of the monsters from this Mind Flayer's pack, but I can't find them! I think Reaper has some 15mm monsters coming up in December, so we'll be watching for those!

15mm Fantasy: Blue Moon Alien vs. Copplestone Northman

I thought folks might what to see a scale comparison of the Blue Moon Tawanax aliens next to one of the Copplestone Northman models.

Anyway, here they are, battling it out in some temple scenery!

And here's a shot of the latest warrior I painted next to his fellows:

Reaper Idol

Sometimes a figure or terrain piece just works better in a scale it was not originally intended for. I really believe this is the case for this awesome Reaper idol. This thing makes an awesome 15mm graven idol to be found in some tomb, or to sit at the center of some dark cult's worship.

If you check the pic at the above link, you can see the one I have is pretty badly miscast, but I feel it only adds to its character!

Next post I'll show off a pic or two of the above Copplestone Northlander going against another Blue Moon alien model.

15mm Fantasy: A Gothic Guest Star

Blue Moon offers an awesome 15mm/18mm Horror line. Exceptionally sculpted by Bob Naismith and Chris Hughes, many of them will work very well for 15mm fantasy games, and today's post shows that idea off.

There's a much larger Werewolf from this pack that I intend to paint up to add to this one. As I develop SoloSystem, I'll want the option to include multiples of the same type of monster in a given scenario.

15mm Fantasy: Part III

Managed to finish another Copplestone Northman--this time one with sword and shield. This guy also has a lovely wolf-skin cloak. Check him out:

These guys practically paint themselves, a credit to Mr. Copplestone's exceptional skills.

Tomorrow I will feature a Blue Moon 15mm Gothic Horror Werewolf miniature (also painted this morning), showing that you can take figures from different periods and use them in 15mm fantasy. He'll be pictured doing battle with today's featured mini.

15mm Fantasy: Part II

Another modest addition for today--the first figure from the Northmen pack from Copplestone's 15mm Fantasy range.

And a slightly better look at the scorpion, who is proving harder to photograph than Sasquatch!

15mm Fantasy: Part I

After spending all of last week painting 10 ships for Dreadfleet I needed a break. A palette cleanser if you will.

I've had three packs of Mark Copplestone's brilliant 15mm Fantasy figures sitting on my desk since just after Labor Day, and I decided it was high time to dig into them. Today's post represents a modest beginning. One figure and something for him to "play" with.

You see, the great thing about 15mm fantasy is the wide swath of monsters it opens up. A mere irritation to a 28mm hero becomes a behemoth to a 15mm champion. So I dipped into my D&D mini collection and did a quick re-paint on a medium scorpion. Instant menace!

And here he is facing off against the "giant" scorpion:

More characters and monsters later this week!
