Stormcast Eternals for Warcry!

Warcry is a game that I've always wanted to try, but never have. I've had the rules for a little over a year now, and they seem fairly easy to grasp. So, I've been slowly working on a Warcry warband (or "gang" as I call them) of Stormcast Eternals. I like the models and chose them for that reason alone (always build gangs by the Rule of Cool, is my motto). I struggled with a color scheme for awhile, then finally decided on what you see here. I definitely did not want the gold look, and I think that the black works well - along with being easy to paint (can you say: Contrast paint Black Templar?). All in all, I think that they turned out pretty good, and I currently have four more about 3/4 of the way painted. I'll get that warband up and running soon!

Bones Hellhound

He's a Bones Hellhound, but I am using him as a Chaos Hound in the store WFB Chaos campaign.

A quick, simple paint job on this guy got him on the table and into the fray--check him out!

A bit blurry, but a size comp w/Champion.

Nobody Asked Me, But...

An occassional installment musing on miniatures, reading, and whatnot.

  • My copy of 13th Age from Pelgrane Press arrived, and I am incredibly impressed with the finished book. This is a fantasy RPG that beautifully mixes classic fantasy and indie design aesthetics for an amazing finished product that gives GMs and players alike permission to be great!
  • As we eagerly await the arrival of the Alpha Strike hard copy book from Catalyst, we've decided to also try the game using BattleForce scale figures.  This amounts to 1/600, or 3mm sci-fi, an area I've never dipped into, but Iron Wind offers just enough stuff to give it a go.  I'll be posting pics of some painted miniatures in this scale soon.  Now if only I can get someone to send me some appropriately sized hex bases! I've got several orders outstanding, so my fingers are crossed something comes this week.
  • My buddy Andrew is doing a dynamite job running our store Chaos Campaign, and he's built a blog to share the love.  Check it out here
  • Gen Con begins this week, and while I will not be there, the rest of the Play Unplugged team will be, so check out the site this week for interviews and other cool con content!
  • For more on 13th Age straight from the lips of its two primary creators, check out this awesome interview the pair did with Forbes Magazine a few months back.

WFB: Ungor Done

Yesterday I finished two Ungors and my Chaos Hound. I'll show them in successive posts (with possible breaks for other stuff) over the next few days.  Anyway, here is the first Ungor:

I found myself wanting to use Army Painter beast brown spray on this project, but I did not.  One thing living in a condo does is limit my ability to use spray primers.  I can use the balcony, but the smell invariably creeps into the condo, so I avoid that, and I did not feel like trekking down to the parking lot to do it.

So brush on primer and Strong Tone ink were used instead.  It's a bit of a speed job, but I think he's quite table ready.

Next up, the Ungor swordsman!

Weekend Projects Afoot

I've got a few irons in the fire for this weekend's hobby projects, so I thought I might provide some visual previews!

First, some small-scale Alpha Strike:

Planning to play Alpha Strike using Battleforce scale minis.

As you can see, these are small--roughly 1/600 vs. standard 1/300.
Next, some Chaos!

Bones Hellhound will make ideal Chaos Hound.

Ungors will make excellent foot soldiers for my Champion.

WFB Chaos Skirmish: Jheggel-Sagg Ready

I know I promised some incremental stage shots of my Chaos lord, but I ended up painting most of him last night.  I do think that I will go back and add some more detail to him, so if that happens, I'll do a followup post on it.

Here he is!

Now he needs to wander into the wastes and find some followers!

WFB Chaos Skirmish: A Beginning

In search of an interesting project, my buddy Andrew has delivered with a very intriguing campaign idea involving Warhammer Fantasy Battle.  A true skirmish, Andrew and a few other friends of mine plan to build very small, truly personalized Chaos warbands for some interesting skirmish action.

And our first games will feature just 1 miniature.  That's all.  A lone warrior, seemingly chosen by the Chaos gods as a champion.  To do this the five of us started by splitting a box of Chaos Marauders.  We each threw in $7 or so and got to pick three sets of the same mini from the sprues.  This will allow us to personalize our champion as he grows in power as a result of his battles and his wanderings.

After game 1, each Champion will slowly attract a retinue of followers. I plan to use a small coterie of Beastmen and eventually add a Dragon Ogre.  This wide open, RPG-based project can include any troop or creature from Chaos' considerable list of options. Daemons, Warriors, Beastmen--all are fair game!

Anyway, converted my champion, Jheggel-Sagg, today.  Here he is in his first incarnation, a simple Marauder wandering the wastes beyond his native Kislev, alone, visited only by weird visions and ghostly voices.

My plan is to paint him later this week.  I'll try to do a few posts of some step-by-step work on him as I go.

Skaven: Classic Plastic

I painted up two classic plastic Skaven yesterday. I figure I will throw these guys into the back ranks of my Stormvermin unit to fill it out a bit more.

Surprisingly nice details on these models!

Skaven Warpfire Team

This plastic Skaven Warpfire Thrower team came from the Isle of Blood boxed set, and I finished it up this past Sunday for use in my Skaven army. I think I'll attach it to my Stormvermin unit.

I believe I have a pressing appointment with the Undead this Sunday, and I may need to light things up a bit! Do zombies burn?

Skaven Stormvermin Unit Finished!

At least for now. It counts as 28 strong, but I built the movement base to accommodate 35 rats.

Here are some shots!

I'll fill that empty back rank up with giant rats until I can get 7 more Stormvermin from somewhere.

Below you can see a better shot of the unit standard:

And below you can see a closer shot of the second Rat Ogre filler model:

I really like the look the Rat Ogres bring to the unit.

Skaven Stormvermin Unit Filler!

Right now I am not in a position to field a 35-rat Stormvermin unit, but I'd like to. So to buff up the 20 Stormvermin I got in my boxed set, I am adding in the two Rat Ogres from the WFB starter box. These guys will act as unit filler, effectively standing for 8 more Stormvermin, and they'll look darn cool doing it.

Here's the first one done:

I hope to have a shot of the nearly completed unit by Friday or Saturday! Work continues apace!

Skaven Warlord Skivak Whitefang

I wanted to do a new warlord to go along with my new unit of Stormvermin for my Skaven army, so I utilized one of the Stormvermin models and added a tentacle arm for good measure. Skivak Whitefang has led the White Rats for more than a year, and works very closely with Master Moulder Tak Fleshshaper to get things done for the army as they compete for control of the Bretonnian city of Mousillon.

Here he is:

Next post, Skivak's bodyguard in the White Rats!

Skaven Warplock Engineer

I needed a magic user for my Skaven army, so I acquired the lovely plastic Warplock Engineer from the the latest WFB boxed set, and painted him up!

All week I'll be featuring more shots of the White Rats, a unit of Stromvermin I am working on for this week's first big installment of our 12 week Warhammer campaign!

Skaven Stormvermin Test Model

Before undertaking any unit, I always do a test model. Here is the first Stormvermin model for the WFB campaign we're doing at Phantom:

As Stormvermin of Clan Moulder, the mercenary unit known as the White Rats were all bred to be great warriors with an affinity for handling magic weapons. They seek magical plunder as a biological imperative. Whether this translates into any real luck or power on the battlefield remains to be seen!

Nobody Asked Me, But...

Being an occasional installment of my musings on gaming.

  • Sometimes you have to go with the flow. I was all set to jump headlong into a Warmachine Khador project, but then my buddy Andrew decided to launch an awesome Warhammer Fantasy Battle story-driven campaign entitled Dread Secrets of Mousillon. Mousillon is a ruined city in the heart of Bretonnia. We've got about six really solid performers from the local shop in on this, so it should be grand! Every participant will have a well-painted army, finished bases, and a fun-first attitude. It's essentially a "cool-kids" campaign.

  • So what will I be running? Skaven! I already have a bunch, and I intend to paint up a brand new unit for this campaign, Stormvermin! I will be painting them as all albinos, a Skaven merc unit known as the White Rats. This week I will figure out the particulars of the paint scheme. I'll certainly share them here.

  • Although Khador is back-burnered, I will not abandon them entirely. Yesterday I assembled my first 'Jack, and I will get some work done on it this week as well, time permitting.

  • On the RPG front Rico will run another installment of D&D 4E this weekend. We're going to find the secrets of a lost Dwarven city, even if it kills us! I will also run another installment of Villain Mission Force at some point. Just need to get inspired to write another story. Something shocking, perhaps.... I did manage to score a Stilt-Man figure, so he will be an option for the players in the next go-round.

  • I am eagerly awaiting the release of John Carter from Disney. I hope it proves as good as the previews suggest.

  • Core: Adventures in the Old World has piqued my interest. It's essentially an open-source revision of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 2nd ed. I have a great fondness for that game, so I hope this makes it out soon!

That's all for now! Look for some Skaven pics later this week!

WFB Skaven: Hellpit Abomination Comp Shots

Here are some comp shots of my newly painted Hellpit Abomination:

This massive piece also possesses some amazing rules, and he is, shall we say, aggressively costed at 250 pts. You get plenty of bang for your buck with this guy!

Undead beware!

WFB Skaven: Hellpit Abomination!

In getting ready for the Halloween WFB events I'll be playing in, I've made a radical change in direction as to the army I will field. I'm returning to Skaven! My buddy Rico has decided he wants to do a small Chaos force, so it makes a lot more sense for me to team with him using Skaven rather than Dwarves.

Since I have 1400 pts. of rats already, I just need to freshen them up a bit. Enter the Hellpit Abomination! This massive plastic kit had been sitting unpainted at Phantom for a while, so I cajoled them into letting me have a go at it.

Here's my preliminary results (I may re-visit him and add further details):

As you can see above, I have him on a huge base. His base was missing when I got him, so I made one from styrene and guestimated the size. I think he looks pretty good, but it might be a tad large.

I did not consult a painted image and decided to just go my own way on how I would paint him. I included lots of earth tones--befitting a creature who began its life as a worm!

Tomorrow I will feature a couple of scale shots of the Hellpit Abom next to some normal Skaven and a Rat Ogre.
