15mm: A Return

Life is about transitions. In the next year my wife and I may be moving to smaller digs. Nothing is certain, but the possibility is a strong one. This means I need to re-evaluate the last 20 years of my miniature collecting. I've always been a prolific modeler and painter, so maybe that makes it easier for me to let go of an army, warband, or individual figure, knowing that I can crank out replacements if the desire hits me.

So over the next few months I am going to sell off a lot of my older painted (and unpainted) figures that I am not using, or that I don't plan to use. The idea is to cut down to the core of my collection, the stuff I use a lot or just won't part with. In the meantime I've been thinking that a return to 15mm modelling and painting is now in order. With 15mm I can still make small purchases and satisfy my desire to paint and collect, and I get satisfying games in on a 2' x 2' square. This scale seems ideal for gaming in a condo or smaller house.

So to celebrate my return to 15mm painting and gaming, I plan to work in some posts with those themes in mind. Games on a 2x2--stuff like Blasters & Bulkheads, Gruntz (a game I have ordered, but not yet tried), and maybe even some fantasy stuff using the excellent 15mm range from Copplestone Castings.

Next to a Khurasan Garn.

For today I've painted up just one figure, but hey, I need to get back in the swing of things! It's a great mini from Critical Mass Games' mercenaries line. More to come!

Thanks for visiting!

  1. I downsized about nine months ago, but my collection is as big as it has been for years - I changed the way I stored things. Rather than foam cases, VHS cases and other boxes with magnetic basing save an amazing amount of room. Worth considering before getting rid of models you might miss.

Bunk it before you junk it ;)

  3. 15mm scifi has treated me very well in the past couple years, and I'm looking forward to stealing painting ideas from you in the near future.

  4. Oh Scott! Don't do it! Surely even a small monthly fee to keep your collection in a storage facility, or at a friends house, would be worth it. I know I regret each and every miniature I painted that I traded off or sold. (I even have a little regret with the commissions I do, and I KNOW they aren't mine). Dude, I'll keep them in my basement for you if I have to lol!

  5. Thanks, guys!

adeptgamer, thanks! I am not going to part with many untouchables. Still, that leaves a lot of stuff. It's just tough. I will likely be maintaining a storage space of some kind. But man, have I accumulated painted (and unpainted) minis over the years. And a lot of stuff I don't use. But I am at the point in process now where I need to wield a scalpel; the hatchet has been put away.

  7. Gruntz is a great game, You'll like it. We play it big and small table. I have had many thoughts recently about doing this with my collection and doing only about 5-6 periods or things. That would cut my collection to about a 1/10. It would be nice to not look at all that stuff I will never paint. I'm looking at you 40k...Good luck Scott during the changes.
