The Thing in the Woods!

Reaper makes a lot of great monsters, but this werewolf-type from the talented hands of Ben Seins has to be one of my favorites. I painted him using a couple of Foundry paints, and the excellent musculature on the mini provided a perfect guide.

I'd love to use him in some gritty, Medieval skirmish games, or some Mordheim-like scenarios as a foe for a single warband of desperate hunters.

I mounted him on a Flames of War base because of his long pose, and I like the look it creates.

Warmachine: Cryx Bloodgorgers!

This week I knocked out a commission for my regular customer, Bill. He wanted a unit of Cryx Bloodgorgers, plus their special character figure. In all, the job called for seven corrupted Trollkin models, all on medium bases.

The assembly was pretty easy by PP standards, and I fell in love with the figures as I was painting--so much so that I needed to share them here before delivering them to Bill today! If I ever do a Cryx force of my own, these guys will be in it.

Goalsystem Fantasy

A number of people have recently asked me about a fantasy version of the Goalsystem engine. One does exist. We initially published it in our Terronus: Isle of Goblins book, but now I sell it by itself as a small, $2.95 PDF at both Wargame Downloads and Saber's Edge.

Here's the cover:

Anyway, it's a small rule set that allows for players to create their own fighters and expand the game in any way they see fit. At some point, I'd like to re-visit this and do a larger version with more options.

Off The Shelf: OG Hussites!

I painted these guys a while back for a "someday" Vlad the Impaler army for Warhammer Historical. As you can see, I never got beyond six of them. I may re-visit the project one day, or at least make use of these guys in some kind of RPG.

OG's Vlad the Impaler range is one of their best (although I wish they had more pics on their site), and these figures take paint very well!

Warhammer 40K: Kroot Load-beast

Every now and then I pull out my Kroot and work on them some more. This past week I converted a Star Wars Reek to use as a Great Gnarloc proxy. The official Forgeworld Great Gnarlocs are cool, but they're not tough enough to justify my spending $90 a piece on them.

I went this route instead!

I simply added some equipment attached to a band of green stuff! Easy and effective!

Warmachine: The Rhulic "15"

I managed to finish 15 pts. of Rhulic stuff this past week and even had a game today! I lost, but the game was fun and I learned a bit about my nascent force.

Without further ado, here are some pics:

I would have done the High Shield Gunners first, because they provide 'Jack marshaling that would be quite useful in a 15 pt. list, but my boxed set came without 4 left arms! This has since been rectified by Privateer Press customer service--great work, folks! So this week I will try to knock out 5 more points, this time adding a solo (Thor Steinhammer), and a second light Warjack (a Gunner).

In the meantime, I have work for customers to do too! And a few other surprises!

Granite Walls From War Torn Worlds

I just picked up a pack of six great walls from War Torn Worlds; I love their terrain and felt I had to share these with folks. These Green Cast walls are made from recycled tire rubber and retail at 6 for $19.99.

Here's some shots of them:

Their durability will make them ideal for club or shop use. I intend to get more of their stuff soon!

Warmachine: Wroughthammer Rockram Ready!

I managed to get one of my Warjacks done. I am quite happy with my method on these pieces, and ended up using more Rawhide color than I originally planned, but it's working out quite well, I think. Here's the results so far!

And a group shot for scale and color matching:

I'd like to polish off the Forge Guard this week; that would be four more of the hammer-wielding dudes pictured above. Maybe I can also sneak in another 'Jack--we'll see!

Warmachine: Dwarf Infantry!

Well, the test-painting is over! It's time to show off the first two completed models for my Rhulic force, one model each from the High Shield Gun Corp and the Horgenhold Forge Guard.

First the Gun Corpsman:

And the Forgeguard:

And a comp shot:

Both boxed sets contain 6 models, so I have my work ahead of me, but with a solid system in place, I can beaver away at them steadily over the next few weeks. In between, I'd like to sneak a Warjack or two in as well. I think I may also get Gorten done so I can play smaller, 15 pt. games as I build toward 25 pts.

We shall see! Thanks for checking out the blog!

Test Paint II: MK Steam Golem

As I dutifully assemble the Rhulic models I have acquired, I am still questing for a paint scheme. I think last night's efforts may have born some fruit.

Utilizing Army Painter's Leather Brown spray, I worked up another test paint, this time using a Mage Knight Steam Golem. I decided to incorporate some of my Foundry 3-step Rawhide, but only on selected armor plates, so the effort could be repeated over numerous models in this force.

After adding some metallic paint, I used my Devlan Mud-white glue mix, and then highlighted the Rawhide up to level 3 in spots. I think this may be my scheme for the Rhulic force. It has a military look, but incorporates some brighter color, and I can dress it up with weathering and Rhulic runes if I like. And the scheme will yield better results than this with PP's highly detailed metal models, vs. MK's somewhat softer plastics.

Hopefully this weekend I can actually dive into some Rhulic models and take a few pics to show them off!

Test Paint: MK Steam Knight

My buddy Rico and I are thinking of doing a Warmachine Rhulic (Dwarven) force, and I am looking for some way to shortcut the painting using Army Painter sprays. I decided to use a Mage Knight figure to conduct a test paint for one of the sprays, Desert Yellow. Here are the results!

After cleaning some of the mold lines off, I based him, then primed with Desert Yellow. After allowing it to dry, I inked the whole model with Devlan Mud wash from GW (mixed with a bit of white glue, as usual). I then did the metallic with Vallejo Gunmetal and some brass. I inked those with Badab Black.

I like the results, but I am still not sure I like them for my Rhulic force. I might want to go closer to the stock paint scheme, which is a weathered, off-white. Similar to one of my favorite foundry colors, Rawhide. More thought is required on this one!
