Gamma World: Rolling Up A Radioactive Android

Characters in the new Gamma World RPG can perish in any number of ways, so I decided to prep a back-up character for my Mind-Coercer/Telekinetic in the event of his untimely demise.

I thought it might be fun to "live-blog" part of chargen session right here. So far, I rolled 2 D20's on the Character Origin Table on pg. 34 of the GW rulebook and got:

1 = Android

Ok, so the character will be some kind of robot/android type; I can work with that.

On the second D20 I got:

15 = Radioactive

Cool! I can totally live with this, and I had a great model in mind from my reserve of pre-painted Mage Knight and Heroclix stuff. Once I determined these two key aspects, I busted out the model and did a quick re-paint. The base was a Heroclix Tharok, one of the coolest super-villains from one of most kickass villain teams in all of comics, the Fatal Five.

Here's how the figure turned out:

After re-basing him I just did some basic touch-ups and hit him with a mix of Badab Black and Devlan Mud inks, mixed with a bit of white glue. He really is a great figure. Do not overlook 'Clix when seeking minis for gaming.

So, according to the rules, an Android's primary Ability score in Intelligence, so I get to assign an "18" to that. So he's got a computer-like brain that should serve him well in the game. Next, being Radioactive means he's tough, so he gets to put a "16" in Constitution. Now I have to roll 3D6 for the other 4 Ability scores, and I will do that right now.

Dexterity = 6 + 6+ 5 = 17

Holy crap! This guy is on his way to being a super-man!

Strength = 5 + 5+ 1 = 11

Ok, so he is obviously not a model designed for physical combat--at least he is not totally feeble!

Wisdom = 2 + 2 + 2 = 6

Ugggh! His circuits must all be geared toward pure logic, or perhaps the lack of maintenance since the apocalypse has left some internal damage and caused him to miss obvious external stimuli--"A large carnivorous ape? Where? Oh, that large carnivorous ape!"

Charisma = 4 + 4 + 3 = 11

Well, at least he is fairly likable, or at least, unremarkable. So here's the final "score" on the Ability scores:

Strength 11
Dexterity 17
Constitution 16
Intelligence 18
Wisdom 6
Charisma 11

That's a nice, interesting spread of ability scores that I can more than live with.

I'll roll up his random gear and other stuff at the session tomorrow morning. He'll be a nice backup should my current PC bite the big one!

Hordes: Croak Hunter

As promised I have finished the first Croak Hunter! This might be my favorite PP figure among the dozens that I have painted for both myself and others. Who couldn't love a Bullywug with such attitude and style?

Anyway, on with the pics!

And here's a few comp shots with other Blindwater minis:

The pics in this post were taken on a third piece of swamp terrain I made using CD's and aquarium plants. These terrain bases are growing on me as they slowly take over the 2'x2' I have next to my painting area.

Next up, a return to Gamma World as I roll up a backup character and then try to find a model for him!

As always, thanks for checking out the blog!

Off The Shelf: Reaper Grave Digger and Henchman

I've been doing this blog for almost 2 years, but I have been painting and modeling for a lot longer than that. Occasionally, I'd like to show off stuff from my collection that I did long before the Four-Color Figures blog got its start. I'll call this occasional feature "Off The Shelf", to represent digging into my shelves of miniature cases and pulling out something neat to show off.

To start us off, I'd like to feature the Reaper Gravedigger and Henchman from the Townsfolk VI pack. Sculpted by Bobby Jackson, this pair are some of my all-time favorite Reaper minis. I painted these almost five years ago when we were play-testing Chaos In Carpathia. I am still pretty happy with the paint jobs today.

I based these guys on square metal bases from the old Wargames company. The cobblestones were made with green stuff putty.

Thanks for checking out the blog!

Swamp Terrain Bases (28mm)

I got two swamp bases done over the weekend. I am not entirely happy with their look, but I think they'll do the job, and they are easy to make. I just need to get a hold of some more old CD's and get some more done. I need them to be able to take up about 24" square section of a 4' x 4' board in order to be useful, so I will need to make at least 3 - 4 more.

Here are some pics:

This week I'll tackle a Croak Hunter, and maybe a few other projects.

Dark Eldar: Hellions!

Or, Hellion, singular. We're having a big Dark Eldar themed event this weekend at Phantom, and I am trying to put together enough stuff to field a decent sized force. I'll be teaming with my buddy Rico, who is organizing the event. I've got 4 more Hellions to paint for Sunday.

Here's the first one done:

And a final shot with a recently painted Wych:

I'd like to go back after this weekend and add some weathering effects to the sky sleds. These are simply wonderful plastic models, and the options you get when building them are fantastic.

Good show, GW!

Steel City Supers Blog Debuts!

My good buddy Sky Hernstrom has debuted his new SuperFig-centric blog today. It's aptly named Steel City Supers!

Here's just a sample of the dynamite paint and conversion work you'll see there:

Sky is a real craftsman when it comes to the hobby, and his sense of color and blending skills are second to none, IMHO. I've added his blog address as a link to the favorites on the side of this site, so you'll know where to go when you want to pay him a visit.

Thanks, Sky! Keep up the great work!

Hordes: Thrullg!

Looking to fill out my 15 pt. Blindwater Congregation force for Hordes, I noticed this guy on the rack at Phantom, so after examining him more closely, I snatched him up. He's a 3 pt. Solo in the game, and has some neat "tech" that will make him pretty useful.

He's a medium model, a lanky bugger--here's a comp shot of him with Barnabas and the Wrastler:

Next up, the Croak Hunter, when he arrives! And swamp terrain, if I can make it work.

Swamp Terrain

I was in Michael's with my wife, JoAnn, today and I came across some nice bags of various types of moss that might make ideal swamp terrain base dressing. With my upcoming Blindwater Congregation force for Hordes, I thought I might try my hand at making a few bases of this stuff.

Today's post will just show the bags of the stuff I brought home from the store. Hopefully later this week I can cobble together some full terrain bases between my painting work.

I may experiment with cutting one of the moss balls in half to see what looks like, but I'll likely try placing a few whole and mixing in some other elements.

Bases will be made from CD's, or maybe shaped Styrofoam.

We shall see!

Hordes: Blackhide Wrastler

Managed to get this guy done in between servings of turkey!

This figure is massive, and at 6 pieces, went together well for a PP kit. I did not have to use any green stuff.

Here's a comp shot of the Wrastler with Barnabas:

Barnabas is no small model (that's a medium, 40mm base he's on), and as you can see, the Wrastler truly lives up to the Large Warbeast billing it gets.

Now I just need to wait to get a hold of the other figures that will comprise my 15 pt. force.

Hordes: Bloody Barnabas!

I've decided to build a new Hordes faction, starting small with a 15 pt. force. I am really liking the stuff for the Minions, and the Blindwater Congregation's croc models are awesome, so I selected Bloody Barnubus. He's got a feat that is easy to use, and a small but effective suite of four spells, and he can do major damage up close in melee.

Very little washing on this guy--I did a lot of layering and some blending with my Foundry 3-step colors. I plan to use the same method with all of the pieces in this force, since it will only be around 6 total models.

Next up, the Blackhide Wrastler large warbeast--and I do mean large!
