GWI Preview: The Robots Are Coming!

Here's a first look at some of the models from our all-robot faction. The idea will be that any of the armies of the first Galactic War can hire a legion of robots. The quality of their weaponry and combat computers will be determined by their color. Red robot legionaries will be the most dangerous. But what's to stop a general from hiring some blue ones on the cheap and re-painting them red? All's fair in love and war!

These guys would also work great as 6mm mecha!

Here are some comparison shots!

More robots to come!

Mythic Skirmish Using SOBH

Me and my buddies Aaron, Lou, and Lee may be getting together on occasional Thursday evenings to do some mythic skirmish using Song of Blades and Heroes and some of the supplements. Aaron is going to do Etruscans with some cool monsters, and I think I may do Herakles and a band of followers.

I have several options for models. I intend to paint a few Cretan archers from my backlog, but I have a really nice Wargames Foundry limited edition Herakles I intend to use. I really prefer this Herakles to the one that was more widely released and still sold with Foundry's Argonauts (check the pack in the lower left corner), but both minis are quite good.

I've included some shots of him and some of my mythic monsters and other cool stuff.

That minotaur is from Harlequin's old fantasy line. He sat in my backlog for the longest time until I painted him earlier this year. He's tough, but I still think Herakles has the edge!

Here's another mythic foe, the Cyclops!

This particular Cyclops is from the old D&D 25th Anniversary miniature line from around 2002, I think.

A while back I think I showed off some of my painted Glorantha miniatures, which have a very Bronze Age, mythic feel to them. Here is my favorite again, which could easily pass for a Herakles miniature!

This is a dynamite line of metal miniatures, once carried by Lance & Laser, but now handled by someone else. Can't remember who though...

Finally, I took some quick pics of my Ral Partha armored centaur, a really solid and tough looking centaur miniature, I think!

If we do manage any games, I will take some pics and report back!

GWI Preview: The Nova Patrol!

Before the onset of the first Galactic War, the Nova Patrol was contracted by all members of the Galactic Federation with keeping the peace both in deep space and planet-side. They served as an independent adjunct to planetary authorities. With the breakdown in order during the early months of the war, Nova Patrol commander Derrick Starlock made the decision to take the Patrol private, making them effectively mercs for hire.

Now they use their incredible skill and resources to aid the highest bidder, Starlock does maintain some scruples, and will not work for any faction that sanctions or uses scorched earth tactics like gene-bombs or neutron missile attacks from high-orbit.

The rules for these guys will appear in a release that follows the initial GWI rulebook.

Tom Scioli To Do GWI Cover

Super-talented comic artist Tom Scioli has agreed to do the cover to Galactic War I! I am very excited because I have worked with Tom before on some SuperSystem projects and his energy and enthusiasm mean that we will have some dynamite imagery gracing the cover of this book!

You can check Tom's personal web site for a complete list of his projects and what he is up to now.

More 15mm previews this weekend, I hope!

GWI: Twanax Sneak Peek

The Ferreen are one of the two initial alien factions in Galactic War I. They don't use walkers, and they only possess one type of hover tank, but they do have savage allies like the Twanax!

These bestial brawlers attack in units 20 strong, broken into fireteams of 4 Twanax minded by a single War-Orb. Their savage power allows them to assault enemy infantry and armor with equal effectiveness.

Here are some size comparison shots for the brawny brutes:

Still more previews later this week, or possibly this weekend!

GWI Preview: Aquans Attack!

Blue Moon has a bunch of new 15mm sci-fi figures on the horizon--7 factions to go with Galactic War I. But there is even more coming down the road. Among these later releases I managed to secure and paint (authorship has its privileges) some of my favorites, which I will preview on this blog over the next few weeks.

First up, the Aquans! These amphibious denizens of the planet Aquos III hire themselves out as mercenaries who specialize in assaults water-worlds, and, dare I say it, wet work!

Here are some comp shots with other companies' minis to provide some scale reference:

Can't wait to paint some more of these guys up! There are 10 unique poses in all, including another sergeant type and an ammo carrier for the HW.

No Origins For Blue Moon

Blue Moon Manufacturing will not be attending Origins. Progress on the Galactic War I rules continues, but the decision was made to focus time and resources on getting the figures and rules out by early fall. The figures will likely be ready before that, in advance of the rules.

I may go to Origins has a civilian, though. I cannot resist the lure of the dealers' area!

Galactic War I: More Previews!

I finally got 'round to painting the Arlock heavy weapons team and the Ferreen Goranax cavalry samples.

Here they are!

We'll be getting more poses for the Goranax Riders, and they'll come in a unit of 6.

I may have time to preview some 15mm robots this weekend. Stay tuned!

40K Kill Team Nearing Completion

I'm juggling a lot of different things of late, but I am inching closer finishing the Ork Kill Team in time for Sunday's event kickoff.

All 5 Nobs are done to my satisfaction, and now I have only 4 Gretchin and the Runtherd left to do.

Here's the pics to back me up!

I hope to also show off some more 15mm sci-fi later this week. We shall see!

A Horror From the North Woods!

Ever since reading X-Men 139-140, and then Hulk #272 as a kid, I've been fascinated by the idea of the Wendigo, that vile spirit of the Great North Woods who Native Americans whisper can possess a man who engages in the dark act of cannibalism while in the wilderness.

My buddy Bill has had a pulp RPG brewing for some time, and this week he announced its imminent start, but there was a twist! We will be called the Arkham Avengers, a group of lower powered, 1930's supers out to battle supernatural threats. I love the whole idea! So I needed a character concept. The game would have a BPRD feel, for sure. We'll be using the Savage Worlds rules and the Super Powers Companion. I decided I would turn the whole Wendigo thing on its head. What if the poor sap who committed that terrible act of cannibalism in the Great North Woods could somehow get control of his curse?

He could turn a terrible negative into a positive! So while browsing the racks at Phantom of the Attic, I spotted the newly released Yeti Warrior from Reaper. He would be perfect for my character. And for his alter ego, the haunted French Canadian trapper, Greg Laroque? I will use a Pulp Figures Tramp Steamer sailor for his human form.

Last night I whipped out the paint brush and had at it! Here's the results!

We're starting at Seasoned level, so Laroque's monstrous alter ego will possess low-level super-strength, enhanced senses, regeneration, fearlessness, and a few other minor powers.

Bill runs a great game, so I can't wait to get playing!

P.S. For anyone "scoring" at home that is one figure from the backlog, and one new figure. Not bad!
