Mordheim Kislevite Bear Proxy?

Ever want to kick yourself for not buying a miniature when you had the chance? Around ten years ago (that long already?) I had the chance to buy the Mordheim Kislevites from GW. I passed, and I forever regret it. Now they're OOP, and hard to find!

The band featured a trained bear and his trainer among the cool options. Here's a pic of the trainer:

That's an image I found online--wish I owned him!

Anyway, at Origins I found a Mage Knight bear that got me thinking I should just make my own Kislevite warband using various proxy minis. So last night I worked on the bear, and here he is!

And here is a comp shot for scale:

I'll drop in more articles on this project in between some more 15mm stuff as time permits. Thanks for visiting!

Origins 2011 Report

As some of you may know, I made the trip to the Origins game show in Columbus, OH this past weekend. Here's some quick bullet points and thoughts on the show:

  • The Dealer's hall was pretty awesome. Not nearly as many RPG vendors as in years past, but lots of small miniature companies. I was particularly impressed with the offerings from Acheson Creations. Their resin buildings and some of their 28mm sci-fi offerings are great, but what really shines is their selection of metal and resin prehistoric animals.
  • I used some of my mercenary painting money to pick up a lot of odds and ends, and some new stuff. I was able to get Mayfair Games classic Chill RPG, the Chill Companion, GM Screen, and a SAVE sourcebook for $25! All were new, if a bit worn from sitting on shelves for 15 years. Maybe I will run a Chill game for this Halloween season? Not sure.
  • Also bought the Arcanis RPG from Paradigm. This is a non-D20, original system with tons of bells and whistles. The level of setting detail and the cosmology rivals Glorantha! Look for my review next week on Play Unplugged.
  • My buddy Damian scored big for me in my quest for decks from ICE's old Middle Earth: The Wizards CCG. This is one of my favorite "dead" CCG's and I now have plenty of options to play some games.
  • I ran my Blasters & Bulkheads demo/playtest for two great guys, Dan and Michael. Thanks for playing, guys! I picked up a few tidbits and made some tweaks. I'll be updating the playtest doc this week.
  • We played On the Edge almost every night! My favorite dead CCG lives on at Origins, and boxes of boosters could be had at the show for $5! Can't beat that!

I hope to have some shots from the B&B playtest later this week.

Thanks for visiting!

28mm Squid-Head Conversion

Back from Origins and my desire to paint has been curtailed by some pretty serious dental work. I did manage to finish off a 28mm plastic conversion I'd been working on.

He's made from a combo of GW, Wargames Factory, and Heresy bits.

A Converted Shuttle Craft

I've been looking to populate B&B with cool miniatures from various lines, and Blue Moon has some interesting hover tanks that can be easily converted for other uses. The thing I like best about them is that they're large and chunky.

The one I like best bears the rather uninspiring name of Hover Tank A. When I built it I demilitarized it by leaving the metal top piece and tank turret off and replacing them with a canopy made from a hex base flight stand and another tank bit.

A touch of paint, and I have a nice shuttle to tool around the planet in!

As always, thanks for visiting!

Lost Oasis: A Sleepy Desert Town

Just wanted to share a few shots of the awesome sci-fi terrain my friend Sky made for me both play-tests and for inclusion in the Blasters & Bulkheads rulebook.

Sky use styrofoam and GZG's excellent 15mm sci-fi fittings to finish them off.

Another Sci-Fi Civilian

Greetings from Origins! I am shopping for deals and playing games! What could be better!

While I am gone I thought I'd show off another of my completed 15mm sci-fi Civilians from RAFM. This guy will make a great NPC tech or scenario objective for a skirmish game.

Note the distinguished white hair!

Whoops! He's run afoul a Hegemony trooper!

I hope to bring back some cool new stuff from the show!

Thanks for stopping by!

Khurasan Chewks

John from Khurasan offers some of the coolest, best sculpted 15mm sci-fi (and other stuff) around! He has kindly allowed me to include some of his awesome minis in the interior shots of the upcoming Blasters & Bulkheads rules I've been going on about here the past few weeks.

Anyway, here are some his amazing Chewks, who will do nicely as Desert Scavs on the planet of Lost Oasis.

Will these Desert Scavs be Kal Drak's friends, or new found foes?

Thanks for checking out the blog--see you at Origins!

Blasters & Bulkheads Origins Play-Test Update!

It looks like I'll be running at least one game of B&B Saturday night around 7:00 PM in the open miniatures area. I'll try to stake out some space as near to the entrance as possible.

I may also run some demos at other times. Folks should let me know when they might be available and I will try to oblige!

Building A Street Scene--Ad Hoc Vehicles

I've been wondering if I can get away with using certain MechWarrior Dark Vehicles for 15mm sci-fi. I need some civilian type runabouts for the street scenes for the Blasters & Bulkheads interiors. I had this old MWDA hover tank sitting around, so I tore the cannon off of it and re-based it. Here's the result:

I imagine the pilots would scrunch up in either pod, or perhaps be in a supine position with a HUD to guide them.

The open "deck" in the center would be ideal for strapping down cargo, or even passengers for low-speed jaunts.

Two For The Bad Guys

Completed two more figures for the "bad guy" sample team for Blasters & Bulkheads, Gleev the Betallion Star Stalker, and his Hover-Robo Sidekick Orb-9. Both are Blue Moon minis from the Galactic War I line.

Later this week I will showcase the entire completed team of Galactic Hegemony operatives.

Blasters & Bulkheads Demo At Origins!

If I can swing it, I'd like to run some kind of guerilla demo/play-test game of B&B at Origins next week.

This would likely transpire either Friday or Saturday night, and take place in one of the open gaming areas. This will not be in the program guide, so in the next few days I'll announce here where and when it will be.

If anyone who reads this blog will be there, I'd love for you to join us!

Beastly Sidekick

The Trusted Sidekick is one of the backgrounds players can choose for their characters. I decided to paint up one of the Blue Moon Tawanax as a hairy sidekick for one of the members of the second operative team I am working on.

And a battle shot!

Brun Cragback and Lug

Yesterday I took a brief trip back to 28mm to knock Brun Cragback and Lug for my Warmachine Dwarven force. What can I say about these guys? Great models, easy builds. And I think they might be decent in the game!

Kudos to Privateer Press on these guys!

Blasters & Bulkheads--My First Operative Team

I need to start play-testing in earnest, so I've assembled my first Operative Team, the Allurian Explorers, and here they are:

From left to right, they are Vrijak Thal, Erglak Kahn, Kal Drak, Captain Myra Naz (in the back), and Savak-7.

Here's their background:

Allurian Explorers
A group of freelance troubleshooters, the Allurian Explorers secretly work to undermine the rule of the corrupt Galactic Hegemony. Based on the star-hub world of Alluria and guided by Essence wielders Kal Drak and and Vrijak Thal, the ragtag band of heroes will only take jobs from clients they believe to be truly needy. Utilizing the starship of Shivan captain Myra Naz, the group maintains its cover as a roving band of Xeno-Anthropologists. Along with Naz’s able robot assistant Savak-7, the group also enjoys the steady aim (and surly temperament) of Aquan soldier Erglak Kahn.

Here's what Kal Drak's game profile will look like:

Name: Kal Drak Species: Human

Background: Essence Warrior

Attributes
Agility 3 Strength 3 Mind 3 Resolve 4

Notes: Essence Warrior array, +1 option for Strength

Move: 6”

Fate: 9 Vitality: 6

Galactic Hegemony Troops?

As I get figures ready for the interior action shots in Blasters & Bulkheads, I am looking to fill the roll of the Galactic Hegemony troopers.

I decided to give the Mercantile Collective figures from Blue Moon a try, but with a mainly white scheme.

A Note On The Old SuperFigs Site

Just a quick note to let folks know that I have stopped supporting the old SuperFigs (fourcolorfigs.com) site.

I never did sell product there, and I did not regularly update it or add new content to it. I simply decided that continuing to pay the hosting and domain fees was not in my best interest. All of the images of the SuperFigs from that site, and more, still reside on the Old Glory 25's web site. There's a perpetual link to this in the Shameless Commerce section of this blog in the left corner.

Content and support for the SuperSystem game can always be found at David Lewis' excellent SuperSystem Annex, and on the SuperFigs Yahoo Group. I'll add links for these to the Favorite Links section on the sidebar.

If we do get some new SuperFigs made, I'll announce it here, and interested parties can go there to purchase them.

Thanks!

Blasters & Bulkheads--Goalsystem Space Opera!

Just a note letting folks know I am currently working on and play-testing the
next GS rules release, Blaster & Bulkheads! This will be Space Opera with all
of the familiar trimmings. Weird mysticism and powers. Energy blades. Robots.
Aliens. Blasters. Vehicles.

The game will include a full campaign system, sample scenarios, teams, and creatures. Good
for 15mm or 28mm. Blue Moon will be doing specific 15mm figures to support it,
but it will contain a full build system and be usable with any other line of
figures.

Hope to have it completed by end of summer!

Blue Moon Shivan Sisterhood

Blue Moon makes a lot of great 15mm sci-fi minis for the upcoming Galactic War I, but these figures can just as easily be used for other games.

Yesterday I dug out a a figure from the Shivan Sisterhood pack and painted her up to use for play-testing a new game I am working on (more on that tomorrow).

Anyway, here she is:

Blue Moon Preview: 15mm Space Knights

Just got some castings of the first two Space Knights for a future Blue Moon 15mm sci-fi pack. I suggested they call these guys Space Knights, for obvious reasons!

There will be more to come, and hopefully, we'll see them sometime around Historicon.

And some comp shots with other 15mm sci-fi to give you an idea of the scale of these awesome new minis!

First, a Blue Moon Aquan:

Next,a GZG Space Pirate:

Next, a Critical Mass alien crewman:

Then, a 15mm.co.uk Space Noble:

Finally, a RAFM militiaman:
