RoboFire: First RoboTanks Done

One of the nice things about the RoboFire rules I am working on is that players can use just about any models in their collections, and the rules should handle scales running from 6mm to 15mm.

I'm also working on the "RoboSquad" sample campaign background for the book, and this will be in 15mm scale. I've ordered and received some awesome 15mm scale HAMR and Titan suits from Rebel Miniatures to do my play-testing.

I got two painted this past weekend. Here are some shots of the finished figures.

I'm going to call this one a Mauler Series "Trooper" in my own background. It'll be a standard, medium weight RoboTank. The above machine belongs to one Ace Sullivan, and here he is with it:

(Slightly out of focus! Sorry!)

Thal Grimm gets a machine as well! I am calling it a Reaver Series "Gunslinger." Here it is:

And here is Thal posing with his machine:

Here's a final comp shot:

I painted the RoboTanks using GW Khemri Brown, used a medium gray for the weapons, added some Foundry Phlegm Green A and B for the camo and canopies, and hit the whole thing with a coating of Army Painter Soft Tone dip. I'm quite happy with the military final look I got.

More to come!

Thanks for visiting!

  1. That looks awsome! That brings back memories of all those cool early 90's mech cartoons.

    1. Joe, that's the idea! I just got the Ok from Khurasan and Rebel so these models will be in the book! Very excited!

  2. I'm getting more and more interested in Robofire. I think we're going to see a rise in 15mm Mecha-centric gaming this year with all the new models. A good set of rules will really help those types of games catch on.

  3. Yes, I hope to release and write a set of rules that can play well in scales from 6mm - 15mm.

I've got some optional and "plug-in" rules that accentuate the 15mm scale. This includes increased move rates and extended range bands.

  4. Scott, I know the rules sweet spot is about ten models a player(or side really), anything in the works for a 6mm large battles (6-12 units of 4-5 tanks plus infantry). I think it would be easy enough to do with teh current set, just wonder about play time.

    1. Nothing as of yet. I am think the RoboFire rules could be hammered into that direction with a supplement.

You could also change the nature of the game with creative basing. You could ignore the Systems damage rules, and then think of a 6 damage capacity Medium 'Mech as three 2 damage capacity Mechs. Tweak this with an application of the henchmen rules, perhaps?

Then you have the potential for bigger games right there.

Right now I am focused on my 'Mech fever dream born of too many re-readings of _Decision at Thunder Rift_ and other smallish scale sci-fi conflicts.

  5. Yep. I agree. I know there is a way to do it, especially with as many ways as we have incorporated the GS mechanics to our homebrewed games. And Robofire handles a bunch of the shooting and stuff.

I have been painting some 6mm sci fi tanks and infantry as an aside right now and it got me thinking how to do the units. I think you may be right. It may be in the systems damage rules and the henchmen rules combined.

My mecha dreams have been fueled(after Macross as a kid)by the great fluff in Heavy Gear. I had everyone of the orginal RPG and gaming books they made. What incredible art for an RPG. I still have at least a hundred mechs each side(north and south) for the RAFM scale. Tanks, Striders, Artillery, infantry. Its crazy. And have a nice selection of the DP9 stuff too(about 50-60).

I am looking forward to using Khurasan minis, and RAFM Gears(or even DP9 gears) for the 'plug in' you are working on.

    1. Nice! Let me know if you'd like to have a gander at the current play-test document. Another pair of eyes would be nice!
